The Spiritual Gift of Helps/Service
Helps/Service: A Spiritual Gift Definition
The spiritual gift of Helps is sometimes also called the gift of Service or Mercy. A common attribute of this spiritual gift is the passion to humbly serve and support others. Characteristically, people with the spiritual gift of Helps will display a natural servant heart and seek the welfare of others. This they will do even to the point of self-sacrifice. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for people with the spiritual gift of Helps to feel like they don’t have any gifts. But, this is far from true
When the spiritual gift of Helps is appropriately applied, the helper is acting much like Jesus who said: “I did not come to be served, but to serve” (Matthew 20:28). Likewise, Paul speaks honorably about Phoebe who also had the spiritual gift of Helps. Here he states: ”I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant of the church in Cenchrea…for she has been a great help to many people, including me” (Romans 16:1 & 2). Likewise in 1 Corinthians 12:27-31, the Apostle Paul also lists “helping others” among the “greater gifts”. Finally, Peter instructs, “if anyone serves, he should do it in the strength that God provides….” ( 1 Peter 4:11).
